[DeadCelebrityAlert] Venerable character actor G.D. Spradlin, 90

Gervase Duan "G.D." Spradlin, a character actor best known for playing authority figures in television and films, including "The Godfather: Part II" and "Apocalypse Now," has died. He was 90.

A former oil company lawyer and millionaire independent oil producer who didn't begin acting until he was in his 40s, the tall and lean Oklahoma native played his share of doctors, ministers, judges, military officers and historical figures during his more than 30-year acting career.

He portrayed President Johnson in the 1985 TV mini-series "Robert Kennedy & His Times" and President Jackson in the 1986 TV movie "Houston: The Legend of Texas."

His breakthrough movie role as a character actor was as corrupt Nevada Sen. Pat Geary in director Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather: Part II" in 1974.

Five years later, Spradlin was the Army general who sent Martin Sheen's Capt. Willard up river to find and kill Marlon Brando's Col. Kurtz in Coppola's Vietnam war movie "Apocalypse Now."

ROBERT CHESTER WILSON ETTINGER IMMORTALIST 4-12-1918 - 23-7-2011

Robert Ettinger, the intellectual father of the cryonics movement, whose members have themselves frozen at death pending scientific resurrection, has died at his home at Clinton Township in, Michigan, in the United States. He was 92.

Ettinger styled himself an ''immortalist'', since he argued that whole body or head-only freezing (''neurological suspension'') was only one means of achieving indefinite life. His rationale for pursuing this goal was contained in his book The Prospect Of Immortality (1964), which revealed him as an unquenchable optimist about mankind's technological future.

Ettinger's frozen body has joined those of his mother and two wives in cold storage. His first patient was his mother, Rhea, who died in 1977. ''I don't know if she was very enthusiastic about it,'' he said, ''but she was willing.'' A decade later, he froze his second patient - his wife Elaine, who died in 1987 and with whom he had two children. The next year he married his second wife, Mae. When she died in 2000, she was the institute's 34th patient.

Cryonics was a serious topic for Ettinger, but he had a sense of humour. ''If both of my wives are revived,'' he said last year, ''that will be a high class problem.''

He is survived by a son, David, and daughter, Shelley, from his first marriage, both of whom are active immortalists.

Director Michael Cacoyannis has died from complications from a heart attack and chronic respiratory problems., according to the Associated Press. He was 89.

Among his other credits are productions of The Devils, Lysistrata, and The Bacchae, as well as the 1983 revival of the musical Zorba...

Cacoyannis' other screen credits include Stella, Electra, Iphigenia, and Sweet Country, as well as a 1999 version of The Cherry Orchard, which starred Alan Bates, Gerard Butler, Frances de la Tour, and Charlotte Rampling.
