'General Hospital' Star John Ingle Dies at 84; Watch His Poignant Final Scene

Actor John Ingle , who played patriarch Edward Quartermaine on " General Hospital ," has passed away at the age of 84. Ingle joined the show in 1993, taking over the role originated by David Lewis.
Ingle had an unusual path to stardom. For decades, he worked as a drama teacher at Beverly Hills High, where his students included many future stars, including Nicolas Cage , David Schwimmer and Barbara Hershey .
After retiring, Ingle began pursuing his own Hollywood career and quickly found work. His other television credits included roles on " Big Love " and " The Office ," where he portrayed the "Dunder" in Dunder-Mifflin. His film roles included playing the high school principal in the cult film " Heathers ."
Ingle had been ill for several months and was unable to make many appearances on "GH." Last week, his final episode aired, in which Edward nobly gave his dose of an antidote to a fatal toxin to a young girl. Watch the heartbreaking scene here.
Ingle's coworkers shared their feelings about his death on Twitter. Lisa LoCicero (Olivia) Tweeted, "A better mix of artist, humanitarian, and friend has never existed. One complement from him I'll keep forever."
Wrote Sean Kanan (ex-A.J./Deacon "The Bold & the Beautiful"): "John Ingle has passed away. He was a kind man who taught me a great deal about what it means to be an actor and a man. Rest well my friend."
Added Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), "Mr. Ingle, I have such admiration for the way you lived your life. You will be missed sir."
Ingle is survived by five daughters, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife of 58 years, Grace-Lynne, died in February 2012.
