Faye Treadwell, Former Manager of the Drifters, Dies at 84
Pioneering African-American female exec won trademark legal battle.
Faye Treadwell, who as manager of R&B legends the Drifters in the late 1960s became one of the first female African-American entertainment managers in show business, died May 22 at her home in Burbank. She was 84.

Treadwell died after a long illness, according to her daughter, Tina Treadwell, president of Treadwell Entertainment and a former vp at the Disney Channel.
After the 1967 death of her husband George Treadwell - who gained control of the Drifters by buying the share held by original member Clyde McPhatter - Faye Treadwell bought out her late husband's former business partners and assumed management and control of the group.

The Drifters formed in 1953 and over the years have split into several splinter groups, continuing to perform today. Their hits include "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," "Under the Boardwalk," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Up on the Roof" and "Come on Over to My Place." Ben E. King performed with the "New Drifters" for a year in the late 1950s.

Faye Treadwell took the Drifters to London in the 1970s and in 2006 won a legal battle to keep control of the group's trademark. She was based in the English capital for more than 30 years and also had a home in Englewood, N.J.

In addition to Tina, survivors include her 107-year-old mother, Sara Mae Johnson, and sisters Imogene Azora and Saundra Arterberry.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and/or the Rhythm & Blues Foundation.

Funeral services will be held in Pasadena and Englewood.

Jack Kevorkian — embraced as a compassionate crusader and reviled as a murderous crank — died early this morning.

Known as Dr. Death even before launching his fierce advocacy and practice of assisted suicides, Kevorkian, 83, died at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he had been hospitalized with kidney and heart problems. ...

Since his first acknowledged assisted suicide in 1990, authorities had tried to rein in Kevorkian as the toll of his clients soared. He was charged four times with murder only to have three juries acquit him and one case collapse in mistrial.

That streak of courtroom triumphs ended with the 1998 death of Thomas Youk, 52, of Waterford, who had Lou Gehrig's disease.

In a self-inflicted triple injury, Kevorkian videotaped himself injecting Youk, had it broadcast on "60 Minutes," and then acted as his own lawyer in the ensuing Oakland County murder trial.

Kevorkian was convicted of second-degree murder and drew a 10- to 25-year prison term at his 1999 sentencing. He was released in 2005 and discharged from parole in 2009. ...

At 6 feet 7, Arness was a bigger-than-life actor who amply filled the boots of the mythic Dodge City lawman in the series, which earned praise for breaking TV western-genre conventions with its strong dramatic stories and psychologically complex characters. ...

Of Norwegian descent, Arness was born James Aurness in Minneapolis on May 26, 1923. His brother, future actor Peter Graves ["Mission: Impossible"; "Airplane!"], was born three years later. ...

After being drafted into the Army during his freshman year at Beloit College in Wisconsin, in early 1943, Arness was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and took part in the landing at Anzio, Italy, in 1944. (Because of his height, he was chosen to be the first off his landing craft to test the depth of the water.)

Later, while walking point on a night patrol through a vineyard, Arness walked into a German machine-gun nest and rounds severely splintered the bones in his lower right leg. The wound resulted in his leg being shortened by about 5/8 of an inch, and he thereafter wore a lift in his shoe. ...

On the "Gunsmoke" set, Arness was known for his sense of humor. He enjoyed practical jokes and was prone to uncontrollable fits of laughter. ...

A surfer since he arrived in California, he learned to fly in the late '60s so he could easily get to remote surf breaks in Baja. ...
