[DeadCelebrityAlert] Marcia Wallace, 70

(CNN) -- Marcia Wallace, whose four-decade television career included playing the secretary on "The Bob Newhart Show" and Bart's fourth-grade teacher on "The Simpsons," has died, her agent said Saturday.

Wallace was 70, according to imdb.com. Her cause of death was not immediately confirmed.

Wallace starred for six seasons as Carol Kester on "The Bob Newhart Show" in the 1970s and reprised the role in the 1990s on "Murphy Brown."

But it was her Emmy-winning role as Edna Krabappel, Bart Simpson's teacher with the snarky laugh, that may have earned her the most fame in recent years. It was a part she held since the show's premiere in 1990.

Wallace was a regular guest star on a host of popular TV shows in the 1970s and 1980s, from "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" to "Gimme a Break!", "ALF," "Night Court," "Charles in Charge" and "Magnum, P.I."

She was also a mainstay of TV game shows such "The Hollywood Squares," "Password" and "The (New) $25,000 Pyramid" and starred in numerous stage productions including a touring production of "The Vagina Monologues."

In recent years, Wallace also advocated for awareness of breast cancer, a disease she battled herself. Her 2004 book, "Don't Look Back, We're Not Going That Way," in part chronicled her fight with breast cancer.

[DeadCelebrityAlert] UPDATED: ‘Simpsons’ Will ‘Retire’ Teacher Played by Marcia Wallace/Jamaican musician Tony Brevett dies from cancer

UPDATED: Mrs. Edna Krabappel, the chain-smoking fourth grade teacher with a derisive laugh on "The Simpsons," will be retired after more than two decades on the show following the news that Marcia Wallace, the comedienne who gave voice to the character, died Friday at the age of 70 from complications related to breast cancer.

"I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace," executive producer Al Jean said in a statement on Saturday. "She was beloved by all at 'The Simpsons' and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character."

PREVIOUSLY: Marcia Wallace, the star of "The Bob Newhart Show" and "The Simpsons," died Friday, confirmed Al Jean, the executive producer of "The Simpsons," on Saturday. Wallace, 70, died of complications related to breast cancer.

Wallace's blazing red hair and bubbly delivery were tailormade for the role of outer-office receptionist Carol, who worked for the straight-laced Bob Hartley, the psychologist played by Newhart on the hit CBS show of the 1970s.

Watch Marcia Wallace in a classic episode of "The Bob Newhart Show":

She would remain with "The Bob Newhart Show" for its six-season run before making guest appearances on shows such as "ALF" and "Murphy Brown." She became a regular presence on game shows such as "The 25,000 Pyramid" and "The Hollywood Squares."

She would also build a second career as a voice-over actress, giving life to Edna Krabappel, Bart Simpson's teacher on "The Simpsons." The role, a sublime parody of disaffected instruction, earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 1992.

Wallace's career began with a semi-regular stint on "The Merv Griffin Show," and also involved successful forays on the New York and Los Angeles state where she appeared in productions of "The Vagina Monologues," "Gypsy" and "The Prisoner of Second Avenue."

Wallace was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985 and became involved in charitable groups involved with treating the disease.

She is survived by a son. She is predeceased by a husband, Dennis Hawley.

[DeadCelebrityAlert] Stuntman and 'Smokey' director Hal Needham dies

Stuntman and 'Smokey' director Hal Needham dies

FILE - In this Dec. 1, 2012 file photo, Hal Needham arrives at the 4th Annual Governors A...

Sat Oct 26, 12:22 PM UTC

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hal Needham, a top Hollywood stuntman who turned to directing rousing action films including "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Cannonball Run," has died. He was 82.

His business managers tell the Los Angeles Times that Needham died Friday in Los Angeles.

A former paratrooper, Needham appeared in thousands of TV episodes and hundreds of movies, performing and designing stunts and new equipment to execute them.

Needham jumped from planes, was dragged by horses and wrecked cars — breaking 56 bones in the process.

His best-known directing efforts involved 1970s Burt Reynolds action comedies, including "Smokey," ''Cannonball Run" and "Stroker Ace." He also directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in "The Villain."

In a Twitter posting, Schwarzenegger calls Needham an icon.

Needham received an honorary Oscar last year.
