NEW YORK (AP) — L'Wren Scott, a fashion designer and celebrity stylist who was Mick Jagger's girlfriend, was found dead in Manhattan on Monday in what was being investigated as an apparent suicide.

Scott's assistant found her hanging at 10 a.m. Monday; no note was found and there was no sign of foul play, police said.

Her spokesperson requested privacy for her family and friends.

Mick Jagger's representative said the singer was "completely shocked and devastated by the news." The pair had been dating since 2001.

Scott, who was adopted by Mormon parents and raised in Roy, Utah, had her own fashion label popular with celebrities. She was a fixture on Jagger's arm and, at around 6-foot-3, towered over her famous boyfriend.

She founded her high-end label in 2006 and recently created a more affordable line of clothes with Banana Republic.

On the red carpet, she has dressed stars like Nicole Kidman, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie.

"This is a horrible and tragic loss," said Madonna. "I'm so upset. I loved L'Wren's work and she was always so generous with me."

Just last month, Scott canceled her London Fashion Week show, due to reported production delays.

Also last month, makeup artist Bobbi Brown collaborated with Scott on a cosmetics line called the Bobbi Brown x L'Wren Scott Collection.

"I am devastated by the tragic news about L'Wren," Brown said on her website. "She was a visionary designer who I very much enjoyed working with, but she was also smart and kind. My thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her loved ones during this very sad time."

It is highly regarded as one of the most iconic photographs from the 20th century. A sailor bends a nurse over his knee and holds her as they passionately lock lips in Times Square. Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt snapped the jubilant duo mid-kiss on Aug. 14, 1945, the day Japan surrendered in WW II.

Glenn McDuffie, the man believed to be the sailor, has died. He was 86, his family confirmed to the Houston Chronicle .

"I heard someone running and stopping right in front of us," McDuffie told the newspaper about the impromptu moment in 2007. He was 18 years old when the photograph was taken.

He continued: "I raised my head up, and it was a photographer. I tried to get my hand out of the way so I wouldn't block her face, and I kissed her just long enough for him to take the picture."

According to the AP , the famous pair never spoke a word, but their brief encounter is one of the most memorable kisses in history. 

Several other men came forward as the sailor and Eisenstaedt never confirmed the identity of the man in the photograph. Speculation largely ended six years ago when forensic artist Lois Gibson said the man in the photograph was McDuffie.

Decades after the snapshot, many women would approach McDuffie and ask to recreate the magical smooch. But they usually got to kiss his cheek, Gibson told the newspaper.
