[DeadCelebrityAlert] Arnold Palmer dies

USA TODAY - Before accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, Arnold Palmer shared a few laughs with President George W. Bush and gave the commander in chief a few golf tips in the East Room of the White House.

Five years later, when honored with the Congressional Gold Medal, Palmer, who again offered golf tips to some of the most important politicians in the country, jokingly thanked the House and the Senate for being able to agree on something.

After receiving the highest civilian awards given in the United States, Palmer went outside each day, at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the U.S. Capitol, and signed autographs for hundreds of people.

That was Palmer, a man who connected with the masses, who related to kids, the hourly wage employee, the CEO — and Presidents.

[DeadCelebrityAlert] Arnold Palmer, 87

Legendary golfer Arnold Palmer has passed away at 87

Palmer, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, was one of the best players in the history of the sport. The Hall of Fame's website says, "It is not hyperbole to say that golf's place within popular culture today is due in large part to the powerful presence of Arnold Palmer."

The Hall of Fame pointed out Palmer's timing as a star in the 1960s, when television was just starting to become a popular medium. It noted that he used his "boldness and charisma" to appeal to fans as one of the most endearing figures in the sport.

Palmer did more than win fans with his charisma. He prevailed at plenty of tournaments in some of the most pressure-packed moments, ranking fifth on the PGA Tour's win list with 62 titles.

He won seven major championshipsfour Masters, two British Opens and one U.S. Openin his career, which places him in a tie for seventh place on the all-time list. Palmer also won at least one PGA Tour tournament in 17 straight years (1955-71), which is tied for the most ever with fellow legend Jack Nicklaus.
