Don Grady, ex-Mouseketeer and 'My Three Sons' Star, Dies at 68

Don Grady , who was famous for playing one of the titular characters in the iconic TV series " My Three Sons ," died Tuesday after fighting cancer. He was 68.
The 1960s-era sitcom star was also one of the original Mouseketeers, a role he played when he was 11.
Barry Livingston, who played Grady's adopted brother on "My Three Sons," expressed his sadness on Facebook , writing "Sad, sad day. My dear friend and TV brother, Don Grady, passed away today. He was an inspiration to me in so many ways and his impact on my life is indelible. I will miss him greatly."
Grady is survived by his wife, Ginny, and their son, Joey, and daughter, Tessa.

Gad Beck, an anti-Nazi Zionist resistance fighter and the last known gay Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, died on Sunday in Berlin. He passed away in a senior citizens' home six days before his 89th birthday, which would have been on June 30.
Beck was a pioneering gay activist and educator in a severely anti-homosexual, repressive post-World War II German society. He was famous for his witty, lively style of speaking. ...
Perhaps the single most important experience that shaped his life was the wartime effort to rescue his boyfriend. Beck donned a Hitler Youth uniform and entered a deportation center to free his Jewish lover Manfred Lewin, who had declined to separate himself from his family.
The Nazis would later deport the entire Lewin family to Auschwitz, where they were murdered.
Speaking about his life as a gay Jew, Beck invoked a line frequently cited about homosexuality: "God doesn't punish for a life of love."
He was featured in the film The Life of Gad Beck and the documentary Paragraph 175. ...
Following his release, Beck joined Chug Chaluzi, an underground Zionist resistance youth group, and played a key role in securing the survival of Jews in Berlin. ...

Nora Ephron, the celebrated screenwriter and director, died of leukemia Tuesday evening in New York, according to The New York Times. ...
Ephron, best known for penning the screenplay for "When Harry Met Sally" (1989) and then writing and directing "Sleepless in Seattle" (1989) and "You've Got Mail" (1998), had not been reported as ill prior to a story from gossip columnist Liz Smith -- which repeatedly referred to the 71-year-old in the past tense while never pronouncing her dead. ...
Her screenplays for "Silkwood," "Harry" and "Sleepless" all earned Oscar nominations.
Ephron moved into directing with the 1992 feature "This Is My Life," the story of a stand-up comic starring Julie Kavner. The following year, "Sleepless" proved to be a huge hit, making Ephron one of Hollywood's few successful woman directors. Most recently, she directed 2009's "Julie & Julia," which starred her frequent collaborator Meryl Streep as Julia Child.
Ephron is married to the writer Nicholas Pileggi and has two sons, Jacob and Max Bernstein, from her previous marriage to investigative reporter Carl Bernstein.

Composer, lyricist Richard Adler dies at 90 in NY

Composer and lyricist Richard Adler, who won Tony Awards for co-writing snappy and infectious, songs for such hit Broadway musicals as "The Pajama Game" and "Damn Yankees" and who staged and produced President John F. Kennedy's birthday celebration featuring a breathy Marilyn Monroe, has died. He was 90.
Adler died Thursday at his home in Southampton, N.Y., his widow, Susan A. Ivory, said.
Some of Adler's biggest songs are "You Gotta Have Heart," "Hey, There," "Hernando's Hideaway," "Whatever Lola Wants," "Steam Heat," "Rags to Riches," and "Everybody Loves a Lover."
Adler staged and produced several shows for U.S. presidents, including the unforgettable 1962 extravaganza for Kennedy at Madison Square Garden where Monroe sang "Happy Birthday."
He and Jerry Ross wrote the music and lyrics to "The Pajama Game," a light comedy about labor-management relations at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, which won the best musical Tony in 1955.
In a 2006 interview with The Associated Press, Adler recounted how the song "Hernando's Hideaway" began from "The Pajama Game." The show's authors, George Abbott and Richard Bissell, needed a tune for the second act, and Abbott approached Adler.
"He said, `Write a song that can be performed in a dimly lit, smoke-filled nightclub with a lot of fervent-looking people. Oh, and make it Latin,'" Adler said. "It was a piece of cake for me."
What emerged was a frothy Latin tango with the lyrics: "I know a dark secluded place/A place where no one knows your face/A glass of wine a fast embrace/It's called Hernando's Hideaway... Ole!"
The song went on to have a successful life outside the theater, hitting the top of the pop charts and later being recorded by Archie Blyer, band leader Billy May and even Ella Fitzgerald.
Did Adler think it would be a hit? "No. I had no idea," he said.
Adler teamed up with Ross again for "Damn Yankees," in which a rabid baseball fan sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a chance to lead his favorite team to American League pennant glory. It won the best musical Tony crown the next year.
The fruitful Ross-Adler union ended when Ross died of a lung ailment in 1955 at age 29. Adler went on to earn a Tony nomination for writing the lyrics and music for 1961's "Kwamina."
Adler was born in New York City in 1921 and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1943. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II.
He composed several symphonic works, including "Wilderness Suite," which was commissioned by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and "The Lady Remembers," to celebrate the Statue of Liberty's centennial. He also composed two ballets for the Chicago City Ballet: "Eight by Adler" in 1984 and "Chicago."
Adler also produced works on Broadway, including the play "The Sin of Pat Muldoon" and the musical "Rex." He is a member of the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
Adler is survived by his wife; his children, Andrew Adler, Katherine Adler and Charles Shipman; and three grandchildren, Damien and Scarlett Adler and Lola Jane Shipman.

LeRoy Neiman, a wildly successful American artist who was famous for his colorful portraits of athletes in motion and who became an artistic fixture at such major sporting events as the Olympics and the Super Bowl, has died. He was 91.
Neiman, who was also a longtime contributor to Playboy magazine, died Wednesday in New York, said his longtime publicist, Gail Parenteau. A cause was not disclosed.
The accessible works of art he painted depicted sports and other leisure activities with bold, distinctive strokes on a canvas that invariably brimmed with color. ...

Andrew Sarris, one of the nation's most influential film critics and a champion of auteur theory, which holds that a director's voice is central to great filmmaking, died on Wednesday morning in Manhattan. He was 83.
His wife, the film critic Molly Haskell, said the cause was complications of an infection developed after a fall.
Courtly, incisive and acerbic in equal measure, Mr. Sarris came of critical age in the 1960s as the first great wave of foreign films washed ashore in the United States. From his perch at The Village Voice, and later at The New York Observer, he wrote searchingly of that glorious deluge and the directors behind it -- François Truffaut, Marcel Ophuls, Jean-Luc Godard, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa. ...
He took his place among a handful of stylish and congenitally disputatious critics: Pauline Kael, Stanley Kauffmann, John Simon and Manny Farber. They agreed on just a single point: that film was art worthy of sustained thought and argumentation.
"We were so gloriously contentious, everyone bitching at everyone," Mr. Sarris recalled in a 2009 interview with The New York Times. "We all said some stupid things, but film seemed to matter so much. ..."
